Confidential case search prompting
AI Chat lets you find files and case data in DekkoDEMS by asking in plain language. Instead of building a search by hand, type what you're looking for - "find transcribed files", "find videos in this case", "how many files are in this case?" - and the results appear directly in the chat, with links to view each file or jump to it in the case.

Every prompt is private. Your questions and your case data are never used to train the AI model, and results are only ever shown to you, within your own DekkoDEMS session.
Opening AI Chat
Open the chat from the Confidential AI Chat button. The panel keeps a list of your previous chats, and + New chat starts a fresh one.
Where you open it determines what it searches:
- Inside a case - the chat is scoped to that case. The header shows the case ID (for example "AI Chat in D-0808-1314-2025-81"), and prompts search only that case's files and data.
- From the Case Browser - the chat is scoped to all cases. The header shows "all cases", and prompts search across every case accessible to you.
AI Chat can only see the cases and files you can already access.
What you can ask
AI Chat searches file and case data - things like file names, formats, sizes, owners, upload dates, transcription status, and case attributes. For example:
- "Find transcribed files"
- "Find videos in this case"
- "How many files are in this case?"
- "What was uploaded last week?"
- "Which files did DEMS demo upload?"
Answers come back in the chat as a mix of:
- File results - each with its name, date, and size, plus View (open the file) and Jump to (go to it in the case). Long result lists can be expanded with Show more files.
- Summaries - counts, breakdowns by uploader or format, and upload timelines, written in plain language.

What it can't do
AI Chat searches information about your files, not the content inside them. Prompts like "find these words in the report" or "which video mentions the suspect's name" won't work - the chat cannot read documents, transcripts, or footage to answer.
If you need to find a spoken phrase in a recording, open the file's transcript and use the transcript search instead (see Video and Audio Transcription).
Privacy
- Prompts are private. What you type is used only to answer your question in your session.
- No training on your data. Neither your prompts nor your case data are used to train or improve the AI model.
- Access-controlled. Results only ever include cases and files you have permission to see.
Good to know
- Prompt length. Prompts can be up to 2,000 characters. Press Enter to send, Shift+Enter for a new line.
- Chats are kept per scope. Each chat in the sidebar shows whether it was scoped to a specific case or to all cases, so you can pick up where you left off.
- Be specific. Naming a format, date range, or uploader ("videos uploaded in June by DEMS demo") narrows results faster than a broad prompt.
FAQ
Does AI Chat learn from my cases? No. Your prompts and case data are never used to train the AI model. Prompts are private and results are only shown to you.
Why is the chat only showing results from one case? It was opened from inside that case, so it's scoped to it. Open AI Chat from the Case Browser to search across all cases accessible to you.
Can it find words inside a document or recording? No. AI Chat searches file and case data (names, formats, dates, owners, statuses, attributes), not the content of files. Use the transcript viewer's search to find spoken words in a transcribed recording.
Can it show me files I don't have access to? No. AI Chat only searches cases and files you already have permission to see.
Can I open a file from the results? Yes - use View to open the file, or Jump to to go to its location in the case.
